Before clocks were invented people used the sun, moon and stars to monitor the passing of the day. Even today sundials are still in use and some people can tell time by the opening of flower blossoms.
Round wall clocks are the most common shape. Probably because the sweep of the hands follows a naturally circlular pattern.
