Modern Decor Offers Sleek Spaces Without Clutter

If you love clean, open spaces that are free of clutter, the modern style of decor is the perfect choice. This style offers sleek lines and a minimum of fuss. In the past, this design was often thought to be cold and stark; now, contemporary style is comfortable and welcoming. This article offers tips on decorating your home in a look that is perfect for those who like to keep up with current trends and enjoy an atmosphere that is sleek and efficient.

There are some basic rules to keep in mind when decorating your home in modern style. Simplicity, texture and subtle sophisticated touches allow your rooms to showcase good taste and spaciousness rather than individual accents. Here are a few tips to help you create contemporary spaces that are appealing and cutting edge.

Keep Things Sleek and Fresh

With this style of decor, you want to concentrate on color, shape and space. Black, white and neutral colors are used as a foundation for everything else. Furniture is often black in color, with neutral colored walls to set the tone of the room. Bold, brightly colored accents can then be added to punch up the drama. Conversely, you can have pastel colored walls and keep the furnishings colored in neutral tones of cream and sand. Basically, if your walls are colored, keep the rest of the room neutral. With white or cream walls, use black and neutral furnishings with a minimum of brightly colored accents to add interest.

Simple Lines and Distinct Shapes

The architectural details are perhaps the most important in creating a modern looking room. Less is more; high ceilings, geometric shapes and bold blocks of color add drama and interest. Windows are often left uncovered, and plenty of bare wall is left without accents to clutter and disturb the clean lines. Every piece that is used in contemporary style stands on its own. Your objective is to keep floor spaces, walls and ceilings as open and uncluttered as possible. If you live in an area where you must cover your windows, use basic blinds or curtains that are sleek and modern with no frills.

Choose the Right Furnishings

It is essential that you use the right type of furniture in modern decor. Styles should be smooth and clean, with no added decoration or curves. Legs are left exposed on chairs, sofas, beds and other large pieces. Black, white and other neutral tones are used in upholstered furnishings made of natural fabrics that provide texture and interest. To add a bold splash of color, choose throw pillows in bright, geometric or abstract patterns.

Keep accents to a minimum. For example, an entire wall can be accented with a single over-sized geometric print in bold colors. A single ceramic potted plant adds another burst of color, as does a large candle in a modern shaped container. Avoid floral prints, ruffles, fringe and other cute accents. In modern decor, your intention is to create spaces that are bold, basic and roomy. Use these tips in your home to create rooms that are visually appealing, comfortable and spacious.

What is Modern Decorating and is it For You

It’s been 20 years since you’ve done anything with your house. Or, you’ve just moved into a house or apartment that hasn’t been renovated in more than 20 years and you think it needs a change. Where do you start. What style is best for you?

You have heard of many different term for decorating styles. County, Adirondack, Baroque, Edwardian, and yes, Modern. Now, where do you start and what do they all mean.

In a nutshell, a modern decorating style is one in which employs straight, clean lines with generally plain looking furniture and more often than not uses darker than normal colors.

The main premise behind the modern motif is to eliminate clutter, aid in the ease of cleaning and make everything in the room look and feel organized and functional in it’s own way.

Room decorated using the modern style will be free of most knicknacky type of things and have the main focus on a few more prominent items in the room instead of many things scattered about. People who love the modern lifestyle will generally spend a large amount of money of those few and special items instead of spreading the money around on a variety of different things.

The darker colors used in modern decorating like reds, blacks, greens and occasionally some whites mixed in are used to accent and backdrop the various items that accessorize the rooms they are decorated with. You must use caution with this approach though depending on the construction of the rooms you are using this technique with. You do not want to make them feel or appear smaller than they are thereby creating a claustrophobic atmosphere within the room.

You may have noticed in many modern schemes the use of large painted blocks of many different darker colors on walls and used in different types of flooring. Oftentimes these blocks on the walls are accessorized by shelving that will accent modern art pieces. Modern paintings are also used in conjunction with differing wall colors giving the viewer the impression that less is more and therefore much better.

Young professionals are especially into the modern looks of classy and sleek and work diligently to tastefully decorate all the rooms with minimal amounts of furniture. Most furniture will not be accessorized with pillows and blankets but rather have only a few floor accessories and end tables needed for hosting parties.

Obviously, the modern look is not for those who have or are considering having children. Modern and children do not mix well but that does not mean that you cannot create a special room with the modern look just for you and off limits to the kids. Generally, master bedrooms with attached reading or exercise quarters are excellent to employ the modern look while decorating with a more contemporary design for the rest of the house.

Contemporary you say? Oh yes! But that is another article. Contemporary is another look altogether but is just as functional and actually melds quite well with modern. It is something you may well want to consider in your next designs plans.
